Lowfat Cake in a Jar!

What a fun gift to receive – Cake in a jar!  This is a lemon Cherry cake, but you can use any cake mix to make this cake.

Pour your favorite cake mix in a bowl, add the recommended water, substitute applesauce for the oil and put in two egg whites and one egg.  Beat on high for three minutes.  The cake still tastes amazing, but with a lot less fat and calories.

Next, spray a small pint size jar with non stick spray.  Fill the jar three quarters full, so you’ll have enough room at the top for your fruit.  Place your jar in a muffin pan.  I filled the other five spaces with cupcake liners and made some cupcakes and baked for 15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Did you know cake batter freezes?  I poured the extra cake mix into a freezer bag.  That way next time I want to make a cake in a jar I  just scoop out the frozen batter into a jar.

After your cake is done baking, let cool about an hour then place cherries in a baggie and put in the jar.  This is so that the cake won’t get soggy.  Then, the person you give the gift to can pour the cherries on top and enjoy.  I trimmed the bag so it did not hang too far over the jar.  To finish off I used the lid to trace on scrapbooking paper and cut it out.  I attached the circle with tape on top of the lid.

I spelled out yummy with letter stickers and placed the lid on the jar.

Then, I tied a cute ribbon on the ring.  You could tie a ribbon around the middle of the jar with a plastic fork or spoon.

Yummy Candy Gift Idea!

I made these gifts for my daughters teachers as end of the year gifts. I took a plastic cup and filled it with candy and then took a straw and attached the flower to the top. It was super easy to make. You could change what you put on top, like a ghost for Halloween or Candy Cane for Christmas and have a gift for all seasons. I even made one for my sister in law who graduated from high school this year and attached a gift card on top of a straw. Hope you have fun making these

Upscale old Jeans into cute Summer Shorts!

Don’t know what to do with worn out jeans from winter?  Make them into shorts!  My daughter wanted to still wear her favorite pair of jeans in the summer.  I told her to rummage through my scraps and pick out some fabric she liked.  She came back with pink butterfly fabric.  If you don’t have any scraps a fat quarter will also work.

How to make the shorts:

1.    Cut off the jeans right above the hole.  I used a ruler to make sure my cut was straight.

2.   Cut your scrap fabric to 4” width.  The length will vary depending on the size of jeans,  just make sure it is long enough to go around the whole leg of the jeans.

3.   Fold your scrap fabric in half.  With right sides together pin the scrap fabric to the jeans starting at the inner leg seam (this way you can’t see if your seam is off a little).  Make sure all the salvage edges are facing up.

4.   When you come to the end of the jeans, mark with a pin where the scrap fabric meets.  This is your sewing guide for your seam on the scrap fabric.

You can mark a straight line going down with a fabric pen to make your line straight.

Sew scrap fabric ends together.  Pinking shear or serge the salvages so they won’t fray.

5.   Finish pinning scrap fabric to jeans.  Sew with a ¼” stitch all around jeans.  Pinking shear or serge the savages so they won’t fray.

6.   Repeat steps 2-5 with other leg.  Turn inside out and enjoy your new shorts!
